Pressure Tank 101: Signs It's Failing & What to Do

October 9, 2025

If your water pressure keeps pulsing between strong and weak, or if your well pump seems to run every time you turn on a faucet, your pressure tank may be failing. The pressure tank is one of the most overlooked components of a well system, yet it plays a critical role in maintaining consistent water pressure and protecting your pump from excessive cycling. Understanding how it works and recognizing failure signs early can save you from a costly pump replacement.

How a Pressure Tank Works

A standard pressure tank contains a rubber bladder or diaphragm that separates water from compressed air. When the pump fills the tank, the air above the bladder compresses, storing energy. When you open a faucet, the compressed air pushes water out at steady pressure without the pump running. The pump only turns on when the pressure drops to a set level. This cycling reduces pump wear and maintains consistent pressure. A properly functioning tank should feel light when you tap the top half (air) and heavy at the bottom half (water).

Signs Your Tank Is Failing

The most common failure is a ruptured bladder, which allows water to fill the entire tank and compresses no air. This is called a waterlogged tank. Signs include: water pressure that pulses rapidly, the pump turning on every time you use water, a tank that feels heavy and solid throughout when tapped, visible rust or corrosion on the tank exterior, and water leaking from the tank's air valve. A waterlogged tank causes your pump to short-cycle, which dramatically shortens pump life.

Replacement and Sizing

Pressure tanks typically last 10 to 15 years. When replacement is needed, proper sizing matters. An undersized tank causes frequent cycling, while an oversized tank provides better pressure stability but requires more space. For most homes, a 30- to 50-gallon tank is adequate. At 77 Water Well Inc., we test your well's flow rate and usage patterns to recommend the ideal tank size for your system.
