What Is Hydrofracturing and When Should You Use It?

July 30, 2025

If your water well is producing less water than it used to, hydrofracturing could restore your flow without the expense of drilling a new well. Also known as hydrofracking or water well stimulation, this process uses high-pressure water to open and clean fractures in the bedrock surrounding your well. For Texas well owners dealing with declining yield, it's often the most cost-effective alternative to drilling a completely new well.

How Hydrofracturing Works

The process begins by sealing your well casing and lowering specialized equipment to the bottom of the well. We then pump clean water into the well at pressures up to 3,000 PSI. This high-pressure water forces its way into existing fractures in the surrounding rock, pushing out sediment, mineral deposits, and debris that have clogged the natural water pathways over time. In some cases, the pressure actually creates new micro-fractures that connect your well to previously untapped areas of the aquifer.

When Hydrofracturing Is Recommended

Hydrofracturing is most effective when your well's decline is due to clogged fractures rather than a dropping regional water table. Signs that hydrofracturing might help include: your well previously produced adequate water but has gradually declined, the pump is in good condition but can't draw enough water, your well is in bedrock rather than loose sediment, and the static water level is still adequate but the flow rate has dropped. If the regional aquifer itself is depleted, hydrofracturing won't solve the problem—but our flow tests can determine this before we proceed.

Results and Expectations

Many homeowners see their well yield increase by 50% to 300% after hydrofracturing. The procedure takes a few hours and typically costs a fraction of what drilling a new well would cost. There's no drilling, no mess, and no damage to your landscape. Best of all, you're using your existing well rather than starting over with a new one. We always test your well before and after the procedure so you can see exactly how much improvement was achieved.
