Water Well Freezing Temperatures—remember to wrap your exposed pipes. When temperatures drop below freezing in Texas, well systems that aren't properly protected can suffer serious damage. Unlike northern states where well systems are built for harsh winters, Texas well installations often leave critical components exposed to cold air. Taking a few preventive steps before the first freeze can save you from costly repairs and days without water.
Wrap Exposed Pipes
To prevent freezing you will need to insulate your pipes. You can do this with foam pipe insulation available at any hardware store. Focus on the water line running from your well to your pressure tank, any above-ground plumbing, outdoor spigots, and pipes in unheated pump houses or crawl spaces. For extra protection in areas that have frozen before, add heat tape beneath the insulation. Pay special attention to PVC pipes—they become brittle and crack easily when cold.
Protect Your Pressure Tank and Switch
If your pressure tank is located in an unheated building, garage, or above ground, it needs protection from freezing. A frozen pressure tank can rupture from ice expansion, and a frozen pressure switch will prevent your pump from running when you need it. Wrap the tank with an insulating blanket or tarp, and add a small heat source if possible. Ensure the pressure switch cover is securely closed to keep out moisture and cold air.
Drain Outdoor Lines
Disconnect and drain all garden hoses before freezing weather arrives. A hose left attached can trap water in the spigot and cause the pipe to burst inside your wall. Drain any above-ground irrigation lines. If you have a shut-off valve for outdoor water, turn it off and open the outdoor spigots to drain remaining water from the lines.
Keep Water Flowing During Extreme Cold
During severe cold snaps, let indoor faucets drip slightly. Moving water is much harder to freeze than stagnant water. Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm room air to circulate around pipes on exterior walls. If you have a well system, normal household use helps keep water moving through the pump and pipes, providing natural freeze protection.
