Consumers to Save Water & Money

May 30, 2016

The TCEQ offers several tips to help Texans conserve water and lower costly water bills. With drought conditions affecting much of our state, water conservation isn't just environmentally responsible—it's financially smart. For well owners, conservation also reduces pump wear and extends the life of your entire system. Here are practical, proven strategies that every Texas homeowner can implement.

Fix Leaks Immediately

A single dripping faucet can waste over 3,000 gallons per year. A running toilet can waste 200 gallons per day. For well owners, these leaks also force your pump to cycle unnecessarily, increasing electricity costs and shortening pump life. Check all faucets, toilets, and outdoor spigots for leaks monthly. Replace worn washers and seals promptly. If your well pump seems to run more than usual, investigate for hidden leaks in your plumbing system.

Install Water-Efficient Fixtures

Modern low-flow showerheads use 2.5 gallons per minute or less, compared to older models that use 5 to 8 gallons per minute. Low-flow faucet aerators cut sink water use by 30% without affecting performance. High-efficiency toilets use 1.28 gallons per flush versus older models that use 3.5 to 7 gallons. These simple upgrades pay for themselves quickly through reduced water usage and lower pump operating costs.

Optimize Irrigation

Landscape irrigation accounts for up to 70% of residential water use during summer months. Water early in the morning to minimize evaporation. Use drip irrigation for gardens and shrubs instead of sprinklers. Choose drought-tolerant native Texas plants that require minimal watering. Set your irrigation timer to run zones sequentially rather than simultaneously, which reduces peak demand on your well system.

Capture and Reuse Water

Rain barrels collect runoff from your roof for garden irrigation. Greywater systems reuse water from sinks, showers, and washing machines for landscape watering. While greywater systems require more planning and investment, rain barrels are inexpensive and easy to install. Every gallon you collect and reuse is a gallon your well doesn't have to pump.

Monitor Your Well System

A well-maintained system operates more efficiently. Clean or replace sediment filters regularly. Ensure your pressure tank is properly charged so the pump cycles efficiently. Fix small problems before they force the pump to work harder. Annual professional maintenance keeps your system optimized for both performance and conservation.
